Where Jersey marks its freedom Opened by Prince Charles in 1995 to mark the 50th anniversary of Jersey's liberation from German occupation, this iconic square sits at the heart of St Helier. Philip Jackson's powerful bronze sculpture stands at its centre, a moving reminder of the islanders who lived through five years of occupation. On 9th May each year, Liberation Day celebrations bring the whole island together here.
